Rodents: what are they and what diseases do they carry?

There are commonly three types of rodent that are subject to treatment from TDC Pest Control. This includes rats, mice and squirrels. Rats and mice in particular are known to carry a number of health threatening diseases; some of the diseases in which mice are known to carry include:

  • Salmonella bacteria: The Salmonella bacteria (Salmonellosis) causes a gastrointestinal infection and can infect both animals and humans. Usually the infection will last 4-7 days and in more serious cases, those infected may need to be hospitalised, a somewhat ironic statement in this case of disease. In extreme cases, Salmonella has been known to lead to death, though generally this is subject to patients of a higher risk such as the elderly, infants and those with low immunity.
  • Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis (LCMV): Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis is a virus caused by rodents, creating a neurological disease in humans. Those infected can become symptomatic from 8-14 days. Symptoms have two phases, the first phase is less serious and can range from: fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, malaise, vomiting, joint and testicular pain.

Some of the diseases in which rats are known to carry are very similar to mice, however their strain of Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis can be more likely to develop into the following health problems:

  • Weil’s disease: Weil’s disease is a severe form of the bacterial infection Leptospirosis, where the bacteria infects other organs. Weil’s disease only develops in around 10% of Leptospirosis cases. A secondary infection develops after the flu-like symptoms and a brief recovery time. Symptoms can differ depending on the type of organ infected;
  • Brain: fever, high temperature, nausea, vomiting, confused mental state, drowsiness, aggression, seizures, loss of motor control and aversion to lights.
  • Liver, Kidney, Heart: Jaundice, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, swollen ankles, feet and hands, swelling of the liver, decreased urine, shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat.
  • Lungs: High fever, shortness of breath and coughing up blood.

TDC Pest Tip: To deter rodents from infesting in your home, make sure all openings they could squeeze through are sealed, as some rodents can fit through spaces as little as a 6mm.

Do you suspect you may have a rodent infestation in your home or commercial property?

Indications that you may be suffering from a problem with rats or mice can include:

  • Scratching or scampering noises at night, as both rats and mice are nocturnal pests
  • A strong smell of urine as they are prone to urinate as they move around the property
  • Shredded papers and material
  • Signs of smear marks on your skirting boards as a result of their oily fur

Cluster flies: What are they and what do they do?

Cluster flies pose no threat to humans as unlike other flies, they do not lay eggs on human food. During the summer months however, these flies inhabit properties in order for them to hibernate, and in turn ‘cluster’ together, consequently becoming an irritant in the household.

How do I tell if I have a Cluster Fly problem?

There are a few ways to tell if you have cluster flies lurking in your home, noting that cluster flies are slightly smaller than the common blue-bottle fly, and may appear disorientated when attempting to fly. Identified together these flies form a ball-like cluster, also emitting a sweet, sickly odour.

How can cluster flies be treated?

The characteristic ball of flies has to be established for at least 7 days until it can be treated; only after this amount of time will the insecticide affect the entire fly population. The pest controller will ‘fog’ an insecticide upon the cluster of flies. Once all of the flies have been destroyed, the bodies can easily be removed and disposed of by using a vacuum cleaner.
