Pest Q&A: Silver fish
What are silver fish and what do they do?
Silver fish are teardrop shaped insects varying in colour from white to brown grey with some blue-ish silver tones. They have two long antennas on their head and three very prominent ‘tails’ at the end. Measuring at around 12-19mm in length and with quick movement, these household pests are known for surviving in almost any environment, although they prefer dark, damp areas. Female silver fish can lay between 2-20 eggs at a time and are a year round problem. Feeding on carbohydrates, including linen, book bindings, cellulose and dead insects; once they find a sufficient source of food they will remain in the same area.
How can I identify a silver fish infestation?
There are various indications in which can be recognised as a silver fish infestation. If you have noticed some of the following, this could mean you need a pest controller:
What are the differences between silver fish and bed bugs?
Although they both have some similarities, there are actually many differences between silver fish and bed bugs, including their appearance, habitat and motive. Silver fish look very different and are much larger in size than bed bugs, with their preferred habit generally being damp, dry atmospheres such as an attic as opposed to a bedroom. Silver fish do not bite, instead feast on carbohydrates, mould and fungi.
How can silver fish be treated?
A silver fish infestation can be treated by a pest controller from use of a water-based insecticide. The premises will be examined to determine the level of infestation, whilst ensuring there isn’t any other pests present. Silver fish can contaminate an entire property depending on the level of infestation, therefore treatment may have to be carried out across the premises.
Pest Q&A: Bed Bugs
What are bed bugs and what do they do?
Bed Bugs are small, oval parasites that feed on human blood. The reddish-brown insect can leave bites all over the body, in which can cause great irritation, escalating when scratched. Measuring at approximately 5mm in length, these pests live around the seams of mattresses and headboards, however they also prefer to inhabit small, dark spaces, including the back of furniture, a chest of drawers and even a crack in the wall.
How are bed bugs treated by a pest controller?
An expert pest controller can treat the bed bugs from using a water-based insecticide spray. It is important that the treated premises is vacated for at least four hours after the treatment. Bed bugs can contaminate an entire property so it is very important that as much of the area as possible is treated.
When is the best time to treat bed bugs?
Ideally, a bed bug infestation should be treated in the morning. This is because it is more likely that the insecticide will settle, as well as minimising any risk of inhalation of the spray.
Why should a bed bug infestation be treated immediately?
It is important when a bed bug infestation is confirmed, that they are treated as soon as possible. This is because bed bugs can spread rapidly throughout your home, and what may initially have been an infestation in one room could potentially spread throughout the entire premises, proving to be more costly and difficult to eliminate.
Why is it important that a professional pest control engineer is used to treat an infestation?
To prevent further infestation, and to ensure your pest crisis is fully treated, it is important that a pest controller is used to treat the infestation. A fully trained, professional pest controller will have full training and expertise in the handling of pesticides and extermination of pests, and will be able to assess the infested property, to make sure the best action is taken for your pest problem to be resolved safely and efficiently.
